Nomura on Phoneix Mills: Phoenix Mills reported 2QFY26 quarterly update on 10 Oct. The company reported 2QFY26 retail consumption growth at 13% y-y for 2Q. For 1H, consumption growth was at 12% y-y, which is in line with our estimate of FY26F growth of +11% y-y. Overall, we think consumption growth was unexciting. Further, due to the tenant churn exercise, we believe retail income growth would be slower than the consumption growth in 2QFY26F. A key thing to look out for would be how the GST cut would impact consumption growth in 3QFY26F, which is the company’s strongest quarter.
The stock currently trades at 23x FY27F, which we believe is expensive considering EBITDA CAGR of ~15% between FY25-FY28F (vs 43% CAGR between FY22-FY25). Pre-COVID the company used to trade at 10-17x during its stable growth phase. We reiterate Reduce rating and sum of the parts-based target price of Rs 1,350.
– DMART posted in-line results with 11% YoY standalone EBITDA growth as margin contracted 30 bp YoY to 7.6% (in line).
– After three quarters of contraction, DMART’s gross margin expanded 5bp YoY to 14.2% (~20bp beat) in 2Q. However, cost of retailing remained elevated, with ~7% YoY uptick on a per sqft basis (+35bp YoY).
– With quick commerce (QC) players potentially shifting their focus to profitable growth, we believe the peak of competitive intensity may be behind us. However, increased pricing competition from the entry of large online/offline retailers into QC remains a key monitorable.
– We build in a CAGR of 18%/18%/16% in DMART’s consol. revenue/EBITDA/PAT over FY25-28E.
– We reiterate our BUY on DMART with revised target price of Rs 5,000.
HDFC Securities on Avenue Supermarts: DMART reported a standalone revenue of Rs162.2bn
in Q2 (15.4% YoY growth). Q2FY26 same store sales growth stood at 6.8%. The company added
eight new stores in Q2, totaling 17 in H1FY26. We expect store expansion to
accelerate in H2FY26, supported by increased borrowings. Sales density grew
2% YoY to Rs 37.7k/sq. ft. annualized. Gross margin remained largely flat YoY at
14.2% (HSIE: 14.1%). However, EBITDAM contracted 28bps YoY to 7.6% (inline).
We suspect inflation on entry-level wages and expansion-led front
loading of costs have impacted EBITDAM. We maintain our FY26/27/28 EPS
estimates and our ADD rating, with a target price of Rs 4,000/sh, implying
60x Sep-27 P/E.

Morgan Stanley’s October 2025 report highlights that Indian households hold 34,600 tonnes of gold, valued at $3.8 trillion (~89% of India’s GDP), driven by a 62% gold price surge in 2025. This wealth, three times larger than household equity holdings, boosts spending due to a “wealth effect.” The RBI has increased its gold reserves to 880 tonnes (14% of FX reserves) to hedge against global volatility. While gold dominates, household savings are shifting toward equities (15.1% of portfolios in FY25, up from 4% pre-pandemic) and gold ETFs ($1.8B inflows). The report sees this supporting economic growth, with equities potentially overtaking gold as savings formalize, though rupee weakness and price volatility pose risks.

Standard Chartered Global Business Services (GBS) opened its largest global office on October 9, 2025, at DLF Downtown, Chennai. The 7.7 lakh sq ft facility consolidates 13,000 employees from four previous Chennai locations into a sustainable, tech-enabled workspace. It focuses on technology, risk, analytics, compliance, finance, and innovation, reinforcing Chennai’s role as a key hub for the bank’s global operations. The office, part of DLF’s 27-acre campus, supports hybrid work, employee well-being, and green building practices, aligning with Standard Chartered’s digital transformation goals.
Standard Chartered GBS chose India for its largest global office in Chennai due to skilled talent, cost efficiency, a 25-year presence, innovation potential, and modern infrastructure at DLF Downtown.
Reserve Bank of India reported a $0.276 billion decline in total foreign exchange reserves for the week ending October 3, bringing the total to $699.96 billion, just shy of the recent peak of $704.89 billion. The drop was driven by a $4.049 billion decrease in Foreign Currency Assets (FCA), which fell to $577.708 billion due to currency fluctuations and RBI interventions to support the rupee (~₹88.73/USD). However, a $3.753 billion rise in gold reserves to $98.77 billion cushioned the impact. Special Drawing Rights rose slightly by $0.025 billion to $18.81 billion, while the IMF reserve position dipped $0.004 billion to $4.67 billion. Despite the decline, reserves remain strong, covering ~11 months of imports, though ongoing U.S.-China trade tensions could add pressure.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) fell 1.9% (878.82 points) to 45,479.60
The S&P 500 (^GSPC) dropped 2.7% (182 points) to 6,552.51
The Russell 2000 (^RUT) slid 3.0% to 2,394.60
The Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) plummeted 3.6% (820 points) to 22,204.43.
These losses, the worst for the S&P 500 and Nasdaq since April 2025, reflect a broad sell-off driven by renewed U.S.-China trade tensions, particularly China’s export controls on rare earths and tech components.

India plans to open its retail electricity market to private companies nationwide through a draft bill from the Ministry of Power (October 2025). This would end the monopoly of state-run discoms, allowing consumers, especially industries and commercial users, to choose from multiple suppliers. Private players like Adani, Tata Power, and Torrent could expand, potentially lowering tariffs by 10-20% and improving efficiency. The move aims to reduce discom debts ($6.78B in 2025), boost renewable integration, and align with India’s 500 GW non-fossil goal by 2030. Challenges include political resistance and ensuring affordability for low-income users.
