Federal authorities and Nuevo Leon Governor Samuel García started construction of the first section of the Mexico City-Nuevo Laredo. The project’s first sector will connect Saltillo, Monterrey, and Nuevo Laredo, with potential benefits for mobility in Nuevo Leon, according to state authorities.
The work on the line, referred to as El Tren del Norte (The Northern Train) by García, officially started on a 100km stretch in Salinas Victoria, Nuevo Leon. The full Saltillo to Nuevo Laredo section will cover 396km and is expected to serve 7 million passengers annually, with trains traveling at speeds between 160km/h and 200km/h. According to Andrés Lajous, Head, the Rail Transport Regulatory Agency (ARTF), the project’s infrastructure will include a viaduct, 30 railway bridges, and various vehicle crossings and drainage works.
García noted that the new train line will integrate with key state infrastructure projects, such as Monterrey’s Metro lines 4 and 6, to improve overall mobility in Nuevo Leon. “I am very pleased that we are starting with the section from Saltillo to Monterrey, and from Monterrey to Nuevo Laredo. This project will bring a great deal of employment and economic benefits. All of this passenger transport will undoubtedly benefit the mobility in Nuevo Leon,” García said.
