For years, GrapheneOS has been synonymous with Google Pixel hardware. As we’ve previously highlighted, this wasn’t due to brand loyalty, but rather a necessity regarding security standards and hardware requirements.
However, excitement peaked last October when reports confirmed that GrapheneOS had finally partnered with a “major OEM” to break this exclusivity. At the time, the roadmap pointed toward a release in Q4 2026 or sometime in 2027. Unfortunately, for those hoping to ditch their Pixel for a privacy-hardened alternative this year, the timeline has officially shifted.
New details regarding the project surfaced on X (formerly Twitter) following an interaction with the community. While the team previously offered a tentative window of late 2026, they have now clarified that the first non-Pixel device from their new partner will not arrive until 2027.
According to GrapheneOS, the partnership with this unnamed “major Android OEM” has been active since June 2025. While the manufacturer is “very actively working on support,” the hardware pipeline hit a snag regarding the operating system’s strict security prerequisites.
“They were unable to meet all of the hardware requirements for their initial 2026 devices so it’s going to launch in 2027 rather than 2026.”
This effectively kills the hope of a Q4 2026 launch. While a delay is never ideal, it highlights GrapheneOS’s refusal to compromise on security standards—such as proper verified boot support and secure elements—even if it means pushing back a highly anticipated hardware expansion.
The revelation about the 2027 delay actually stemmed from a separate discussion regarding the Clicks Communicator, a niche device featuring a physical keyboard that has caught the eye of enthusiasts.
When asked if this new communicator device would ever support GrapheneOS, the team was blunt: it is “never going to be supported.”
The rejection comes down to two specific deal-breakers that GrapheneOS cites as incompatible with their mission:
For now, the Google Pixel remains the sole home for GrapheneOS. If you are waiting for official support on hardware from a different major manufacturer, your calendar is now marked for 2027.
Tech has been my playground for over a decade. While the Android journey began early, it truly took flight with the revolutionary Lollipop update. Since then, it’s been a parade of Android devices (with a sprinkle of iOS), culminating in a mostly happy marriage with Google’s smart home ecosystem. Expect insightful articles and explorations of the ever-evolving world of Android and Google products coupled with occasional rants on the Nest smart home ecosystem.
