To investigate whether patients with interstitial cystitis show characteristics of other autoimmune diseases, and of Sjögren’s syndrome in particular.

Ten successive patients in whom interstitial cystitis was diagnosed on the basis of clinical picture, cytoscopy and bladder biopsy were examined clinically and immunologically.
Keratoconjunctivitis sicca was found in six patients and focal lymphocytic sialoadenitis in five; two patients displayed both conditions, i.e. primary Sjögren’s syndrome.
Interstitial cystitis is often accompanied by keratoconjunctivitis sicca, focal lymphocytic sialoadenitis or primary Sjögren’s syndrome. The findings support the hypothesis that interstitial cystitis is an autoimmune cystitis.
Onderzoeken of bij patiënten met interstitiële cystitis kenmerken van andere auto-immuunziekten voorkomen, in het bijzonder het syndroom van Sjögren.
Klinisch onderzoek en laboratoriumonderzoek van patiënten.

Bij 10 achtereenvolgende patiënten met de diagnose ‘interstitiële cystitis’ op basis van klinisch beeld, cystoscopie en blaasbiopten werd klinisch en immunologisch onderzoek verricht.
Bij 6 patiënten werd keratoconjunctivitis sicca en bij 5 focale lymfocytaire sialoadenitis vastgesteld; 2 patiënten hadden beide aandoeningen, dus primair syndroom van Sjögren.
Interstitiële cystitis gaat vaak samen met keratoconjunctivitis sicca, focale lymfocytaire sialoadenitis of het primair syndroom van Sjögren. De bevindingen steunen de hypothese dat interstitiële cystitis een auto-immuuncystitis is.
