Survived by his wife, Kimberly and son, Jeremiah, the family confirmed the news via a social media post. Giving in to his three-year battle with colorectal cancer, James Van Der Beek died peacefully earlier today. Soon after his demise, Kimberly Van Der Beek launched a GoFundMe page, seeking donations after the announcement.
The popular teen star, known to have starred in cult-favourites like Varsity Blues and Dawson’s Creek, became one of the most popular teen stars of the late 1990s. In fact, he continued his acting journey and was last seen in a few episodes of ‘Overcompensating’ on Prime Video.
Hours after the GoFundMe campaign was launched with a target to raise $1.3 million, over 19,000 donations poured in. It caused a sudden spike on Google Trends, as the search peaked. Over 2000 people gauged, sending a 200 per cent hike.
Hours after the former teen actor’s death, James Van Der Beek’s GoFundMe page read, “James Van Der Beek was a beloved husband, father, and friend who touched the lives of everyone around him.” The fundraising page added, “After a long and courageous battle with cancer, James passed away on February 11, 2026 leaving behind his devoted wife, Kimberly, and their six wonderful children. Throughout his illness, the family faced not only emotional challenges but also significant financial strain as they did everything possible to support James and provide for his care.”
The couple share six young children, daughters Olivia, Annabel, Emilia and Gwendolyn, and sons Joshua and Jeremiah. According to the GoFundMe campaign, “Kimberly and the children are facing an uncertain future.” As donations and tributes pour in to cover their living expenses, bills, and education, $400,000 have been raised so far.
James Van Der Beekwas diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer in August 2023. However, the family decided to keep it private until 2024. Later, James actively shared his journey on social media and revealed how it was only later that his problems could have led to a cancer diagnosis.
“The costs of James’s medical care and the extended fight against cancer have left the family out of funds,” the statement on the GoFundMe campaign read. “They are working hard to stay in their home and to ensure the children can continue their education and maintain some stability during this incredibly difficult time. The support of friends, family, and the wider community will make a world of difference as they navigate the road ahead.”
The actor, before his death, had also sought financial support from the public and hosted an auction in December 2025. They auctioned off treasured pieces and memorabilia from the actor’s journey on Dawson’s Creek and other shows. The highest-selling item from the auction was Van Der Beek’s necklace, which his titular character gifted to his on-screen girlfriend, Joey (Katie Holmes). It sold for $26,628. All proceeds, amounting to more than $45,000, went towards covering the medical cost of James’ cancer treatment.
India’s power sector is experiencing a significant shift as renewable energy surpasses fossil fuel-based capacity for the first time. The country has achieved its highest-ever annual addition of 52,537 MW in FY26, largely driven by solar power. While analysts see solar as the backbone of new capacity, debates over the role of coal in stabilizing the grid persist.
