Storyline Companion robots winning over Chinese consumers Companion robots are making their way into the mainstream in China. Small, sometimes covered in fur, and rather pet-like, the tiny AI powered devices engage in conversation and provide emotional support. At this store in Beijing, over twenty companion robots are attracting attention. Primarily focused on education and emotional companionship, many parents say the devices can help them in answering some of their children’s basic questions. Consumer: “Because it integrates large-scale AI models, its level of intelligence is quite high. Essentially, it can replace parents in answering many of the child’s questions and can also interact with the child.” Prices for the companion robots at brick-and-mortar shops mostly range from between 42 to 72 U.S. dollars with AI-powered dialogue features part of their core functionality. Zhang Lulu, Toy shop manager: “Currently, there are over 20 AI companion products in the store. When parents purchase AI companion robots, they are more inclined to spend for educational purposes. For younger groups, it’s more about fulfilling their own emotional needs. Products priced around 70 U.S.dollars sell particularly well.” When it comes to humanoid robots, China is a global leader. Last year the country accounted for more than four out of five global humanoid robot installations, mainly for data collection, research, logistics and manufacturing.
