North Korean leader Kim Jong Un pledged to expand nuclear weapons, intercontinental missiles and AI-powered attack systems during a major military parade.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Wednesday, Febraury 25 said his country will continue expanding its nuclear arsenal and developing intercontinental ballistic missiles, artificial intelligence-based strike systems and unmanned drones.
According to the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim made the remarks during a military parade marking the conclusion of the Ninth Congress of the Workers’ Party. He claimed Pyongyang’s international standing has “significantly improved” in recent years.
Kim said North Korea plans to increase both the number of nuclear weapons and their operational capabilities. He stressed the need for advanced missile systems and next-generation warfare technologies to counter what he described as external threats.
Addressing the United States, Kim said dialogue remains possible if Washington abandons its “hostile policy.” However, he described relations with South Korea as confrontational and warned that provocations from Seoul could trigger a direct response.
North Korea has conducted multiple missile tests in recent years, including intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of reaching the US mainland. International sanctions remain in place over its nuclear and weapons programmes.
Regional tensions have risen amid expanded joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea, which Pyongyang views as rehearsals for invasion. Analysts say the North increasingly emphasises asymmetric capabilities, including cyber warfare and drone technology.
Kim’s latest remarks signal continued defiance of international pressure and underscore Pyongyang’s commitment to strengthening strategic deterrence, despite diplomatic deadlock and mounting economic challenges.
