The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission reviewed thousands of public comments on proposed hunting and fishing regulation changes during its March 18-19 meeting in Hot Springs.
According to AGFC staff, more than 24,000 responses were submitted, with just over 20,000 validated for review after removing duplicates and suspected fraudulent entries. Officials said most proposed changes received majority support, though some drew criticism.
One key takeaway from the survey showed a divide between hunters and anglers. Anglers generally favored consistent regulations across regions or statewide, while hunters preferred more location-specific rules.
Commissioners also responded to public feedback by asking staff to remove a proposal that would have increased the horsepower limit on certain mud motors. Many commenters opposed the change and raised concerns about noise levels and increased impact on waterways.
In other discussion, commissioners addressed concerns about converting some special use areas to wildlife management areas, emphasizing that public access and activities would continue while maintaining a focus on habitat conservation.
The commission also received an update on Arkansass elk population. Biologists reported 22 elk were harvested during the 2025 season, with lower harvest numbers reflecting efforts to manage chronic wasting disease and stabilize the herd. Surveys showed a decline in observed elk this year, though officials said weather conditions likely affected counts.
The commission is expected to vote on the proposed regulation changes at its April meeting in Monticello.
