Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen paid a courtesy call on Bangladesh National Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram MP at his office on Wednesday (April 22, 2026).
Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram said that China is the oldest and most trusted friend of Bangladesh. The year 1977 was a milestone in the history of diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and China. He said that martyred President Ziaur Rahman played an important role in strengthening bilateral relations through his visit to China. Later, former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia’s visit in 1991 elevated this relationship to a new height.
The Speaker said that people-to-people relations between the two countries are the foundation of China-Bangladesh relations. Exchange of visits of members of parliament is very important to increase our parliamentary communication with China, which will further advance the good relations between the two countries. He also emphasized the urgent implementation of the Parliamentary Friendship Group between Bangladesh and China in a democratic system of government.
He further mentioned that Ziaur Rahman’s proposal to form SAARC was a revolutionary step in opening up new horizons of cooperation in South Asia. At present, China’s presence as an observer in this organization has added a new dimension to regional development.
At this time, he proposed that China play an important role in implementing the Teesta Project and resolving the Rohingya crisis.
Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen said that Bangladesh’s participation in the Belt and Road Initiative of the Chinese government is important.
At this time, the Ambassador congratulated him on being elected Speaker of the National Parliament and presented a congratulatory memento on behalf of the Chinese government. The Speaker presented a memento with the symbol of the National Memorial to the Chinese Ambassador.
During the meeting, they both reiterated their commitment to take the bilateral relations and development partnership of the two countries to new heights. They discussed China’s role in resolving the Rohingya crisis and the current global fuel crisis.
Senior officials of the Chinese Embassy and relevant senior officials of the Bangladesh National Parliament Secretariat were present at the event.
