SAN ANTONIO — Donathen Perez and his roommates chose not to renew their lease at Tuscany Park Apartments back in 2023. They let apartment management know two months ahead of time. They moved out. They turned in their keys on March 11th of 2024 and signed a form for it.
But then, three months later, Perez got a strange email.
“I randomly got an email that said I owe $1800 from that apartment place,” Perez said.
He called the complex, but he told KENS 5 the management said it was just error and not to worry about it.
“They told me that it was just a systematic error and everything should be good,” Perez said.
But then, three months after that, Perez’s credit report suddenly said he owed someone $5652. He called the company trying to collect it and found out those charges were, in fact, from Tuscany Park Apartments. When he requested documentation on the charges, he found out that Tuscany Park Apartments charged him for fees and utilities after he moved out.
“I just didn’t understand why,” Perez said. “It was extremally shocking. I was so stressed.”
Perez said the debt also prevented him from qualifying for qualifying for a new apartment or for a loan. He said he called Tuscany Park Apartments about the issue, and even visited multiple times, but he couldn’t get the local management to resolve it.
Then, he said, that local management left and new management came in.
“I communicated the same thing and they told me they would get back to me,” Perez said.  “They said they had a full new team.”
Not knowing what else to do, Perez called KENS 5.
KENS 5 then went to the apartment complex and spoke to a new manager about the issue. The new manager, who was extremely helpful, said she had not been aware of the issue but she was willing to look into it.
Two days later, Perez’s roommate, who had been the primary tenant on the lease, was able to talk to the manager.
“She said they are a new wave of management. She said she was going to make sure the problem gets resolved,” Perez said.
KENS 5 also contacted Quantum Leap Property Management to get an official response about the issue. That company then sent our message to an attorney. The attorney said they would not provide any information related to current or past tenants and he did not answer KENS 5’s questions.
Regardless, less than two weeks later, the $5652 debt was removed from Perez’s credit report.
“It’s a great relief. I can get my own apartment now. I won’t be instantly denied by any bank or any apartment complex,” Perez said.
Perez said he’s thankful the new manager at Tuscany Park Apartments was able to help. He’s also glad he called KENS 5.
“KENS 5 was amazing,” Perez said. “It went from them not even contacting me to them saying we are sorry and we are going to take care of this.”
