VIDEO: Large wildfire breaks out on island of Vis as 70 firefighters protect homes – Croatia Week

A large wildfire broke out late on Sunday evening on the Croatian island of Vis, prompting a major emergency response as firefighters worked through the night to prevent the flames from reaching nearby homes.
The fire started at around 10.30 pm in an area of pine forest and Mediterranean scrub near Komiža, alongside the road leading to Podhumlje.
All available firefighting units from the Vis operational area were immediately deployed to the scene. Firefighters from Komiža and Vis are taking part in the operation.
The Komiža Fire Brigade deployed nine vehicles and 35 firefighters, while the Vis Fire Brigade sent six vehicles and a further 35 firefighters, bringing the total response to 15 vehicles and 70 firefighters.
Vatrogasci – 193 posted reports throughout the night.

The wildfire remains active, with dry vegetation and the surrounding open terrain making firefighting efforts more challenging.
Although there were no strong winds overnight, the exceptionally dry ground allowed the fire to spread rapidly during the first hours of the incident.
Flames came close to several houses during the night, but firefighters managed to stop the fire before it reached the properties. Authorities say there is currently no danger to residents.

Firefighting operations are continuing as crews work to bring the blaze under control.
