Deadline is May 1 to apply for the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food & Markets Best Management Practices program. The program provides technical and financial assistance to identify and assess farmstead water‑quality concerns and help farmers implement structural improvements designed to reduce agricultural waste discharges to Vermont waters.
The BMP Program primarily focuses on structural practices located in farmstead and production areas. Examples of conservation practices eligible for cost‑share through the program include barnyard runoff collection, bedded pack facilities, composting stack pads, silage leachate collection, clean‑water diversion (e.g., gutters, ditches, French drains), manure storage systems, milk‑house waste collection and treatment.
All farms required to comply with the Required Agricultural Practices are eligible to apply. Eligible projects are assessed every June to determine which will receive cost‑share funding for the following year’s construction season. Applications received by May 1 will receive an engineering consultation in the spring and will be considered for cost‑share ranking for the 2027 construction season. To apply, visit agriculture.vermont.gov/bmp.

Since retiring from SELCO in 2020, Hale has remained active in community and public service. He currently serves as a part-time community relations officer at a local credit union, provides consulting support to municipalities through the Collins Center at UMass Boston, and serves on several boards.
Bloomer will lead VELCO’s enterprise strategy, external affairs, communications and public policy engagement. A native of Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, she has more than 10 years of experience in the utility sector, including work at Green Mountain Power and roles supporting Vermont’s Office of Disaster Recovery during Tropical Storm Irene.
