A major casting shift in Middle-earth is already making noise, but it’s the reaction behind the scenes that’s grabbing attention. As a new actor steps into the iconic role of Aragorn, fans wondered how the original star, Viggo Mortensen, would feel. Turns out, the response is far from controversial and surprisingly positive.
Director and actor Andy Serkis has shared a key update about the upcoming The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, including how Viggo Mortensen reacted to Jamie Dornan stepping in as Aragorn.
Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Serkis made it clear there’s no bad blood. In fact, he said Mortensen is “thrilled” about the recast, adding, “We are absolutely thrilled… and, by the way, so is Viggo.”
While fans speculated why Mortensen didn’t return, Serkis avoided going into detail. He said he prefers to save those discussions for later, keeping the focus on what’s ahead. Dornan’s casting was officially revealed during Warner Bros.’ CinemaCon presentation, confirming that the film will explore a fresh storyline set between The Hobbit and the original trilogy.
The movie itself promises a deeper dive into one of Tolkien’s most complex figures. Serkis explained that the story is both a physical and psychological chase centered on Gollum. “It’s a hunt… but also a psychological hunt for himself,” he said, teasing a more layered narrative than fans might expect.
Alongside Dornan, the cast includes Ian McKellen returning as Gandalf, Elijah Wood as Frodo, Kate Winslet as Marigol, Leo Woodall as Halvard, and Lee Pace as Thranduil. Serkis also confirmed that much of the original creative team is back, ensuring the film stays rooted in the visual and storytelling style established by Peter Jackson.
Filming is gearing up soon, with the project aiming to balance nostalgia and a fresh perspective. As Serkis put it, the goal is to deliver “a great marriage of a new story” while staying true to the world fans already love. The film is currently set to hit theaters on December 17, 2027.
