Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said Wednesday, July 29, that Mia Bieniemy, the wife of Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, is no longer in the intensive care unit as she continues her recovery.
Mia Bieniemy suffered multiple gunshot wounds during an incident at the couple’s Virginia home as Eric Bieniemy and the Chiefs began training camp Sunday, July 26. Eric Bieniemy’s son, Elijah Bieniemy, was arrested and charged with three felonies.
“She’s doing great, better than she was,” Reid said.
“Making progress,” he added. “So we’re happy about that.”
Bieniemy is still with his wife in Virginia, and “that’s important,” Reid said.
“Eric’s a big part of this. (We) love having him here. But right now, it’s important that he takes care of business. And everybody knows that. So everybody’s game is picked up and they’re all working hard. Eric will be back soon enough to jump in there and do his thing.”
Elijah Bieniemy has been charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony (first offense) and discharge of a firearm inside of a dwelling.
Virginia criminal code defines malicious wounding as, “shoot, stab, cut, or wound any person or by any means cause him bodily injury, with the intent to maim, disfigure, disable, or kill.” He could face up to 33 years in prison if found guilty on all three charges.
Elijah Bieniemy has been held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center. He has a motion hearing scheduled for July 30 and a preliminary hearing set for Aug. 31. Motion hearings do not always require the defendant to be present and it is unclear whether or not Bieniemy will appear in court on Thursday.
Eric Bieniemy returned to his former role as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator for the 2026 season, a title he held from 2018-22, a span in which the Chiefs won the first two Super Bowls of the Patrick Mahomes era.
Since then, he was the Washington Commanders offensive coordinator (2023), the offensive coordinator at UCLA (2024) and the running backs coach for the Chicago Bears last year.
