There is a shortage of workers trained to install big solar systems, so the industry is turning, in some cases, to ex-convicts and other risky candidates to do the jobs.
An Oglesby company is taking that to the next level. Knoblesdorff Enterprises wants to hire second-chance candidates — but no violent or sexual offenders — and to house some at 345 N. Lewis Ave.
Will they get the OK? The Oglesby City Council could settle it Monday.
KE cleared the first hurdle recently when the Oglesby Plan Commission voted 4-2, with two abstentions, to permit development of a boarding facility. Next, the full council takes up the question.
KE is working with the Evolve Foundation to identify trainees and board them. The Plan Commission recommended the project be approved, but with a few sticking points.
The commission recommends the city approve a special use permit, but for two years. After that, the full city council would have to vote on whether to extend the special use.
Boarding would, if approved, be limited to trainees and staff.
