インド科学技術省(MoST)は、傘下のボーズ国立基礎科学研究所の研究者らが、スンダルバンデルタに生息する淡水海綿動物に関連する微生物群集が、有毒金属汚染への対応に重要な役割を果たしていることを明らかにしたと発表した。研究成果は学術誌Microbiology Spectrumに掲載された。図: in-situでの海綿動物の金属取り込みと蓄積を示す模式図と、重金属耐性および可動化能力をもつ多様な共生細菌群集(出典：PIB)淡水海綿動物は、最も初期に出現した多細胞真核生物の1つであり、大量の水をろ過することで水生生態系の健全性を支えている。本研究は、スンダルバン地域の淡水海綿動物における細菌多様性を報告した初の事例で、淡水海綿動物に共生する細菌群集の特徴と機能を解析し、金属汚染との関係を調べた。解析の結果、海綿動物に共生する細菌群集は周囲の水中微生物とは明確に異なり、海綿動物の種や生息環境によって特徴づけられていることが分かった。さらに、海綿動物はヒ素、鉛、カドミウムといった有毒金属を周囲の環境よりも著しく高い濃度で蓄積しており、強い生体蓄積能力を持つことが示された。海綿動物に共生する細菌群集には、金属イオン輸送、金属耐性、抗菌薬耐性に関与する遺伝子が多く確認されている。これらの結果から、共生細菌は単に生存しているだけでなく、金属汚染環境において積極的に解毒や耐性獲得に寄与していることが示唆された。本研究は、海綿動物と微生物の共生関係の生態学的意義を明らかにし、河口域および淡水生態系における水質汚染レベルのモニタリングにおける効果的な生物指標としての淡水海綿動物の役割を強調するものとなった。また、淡水海綿動物はガンジス平原に広がる重金属汚染による水質汚染のバイオレメディエーションに活用できる有望な生物資源となる可能性が示された。(2025年12月18日付発表)サイエンスポータルアジアパシフィック編集部発表論文： Bhattacharya et al.
