U.S. stocks rose on Friday, August 21, but Wall Street’s three major indexes still closed the week lower as Treasury yields remained near multi-year highs. Bitcoin jumped more than 6% above $77,000, gold futures climbed beyond $4,600 per ounce and oil prices extended their advance as investors weighed fiscal risks, bond-market pressure and escalating U.S.-Iran tensions.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 518 points on Friday. However, the Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite each recorded a weekly loss of at least 0.8%, reflecting investor concern that high long-term interest rates may continue weighing on valuations, consumer spending and corporate borrowing.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s plan to expand long-dated government bond buybacks provided only temporary relief to bond markets. The Treasury recently said it would at least double the maximum size of buybacks for longer-dated nominal securities, raising the cap from $2 billion to at least $4 billion per operation.
The policy was designed to support liquidity in less actively traded Treasury bonds and reduce pressure on long-term borrowing costs. Initially, the announcement pushed yields lower. But by the end of the week, the 30-year Treasury yield stood at 5.276%, while the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield finished at 4.737%.
Those levels show that investors remain concerned about large U.S. budget deficits, rising federal debt and persistent inflation. The United States recently exceeded $40 trillion in total public debt, increasing questions about the government’s long-term financing needs.
Bessent said the administration has a “big toolkit” to address bond-market conditions and indicated that more details on fiscal consolidation would be announced in the coming days. However, investors are looking for substantive plans to slow the growth of federal borrowing rather than liquidity measures alone.
Bitcoin was among the market’s biggest winners, rising 6% to above $77,000 and recording its strongest week since 2024. The cryptocurrency benefited from a weaker U.S. dollar, ongoing support from President Donald Trump for crypto-friendly legislation and investor demand for alternatives to traditional financial assets.
Bitcoin’s gains came as Treasury yields remained high, underscoring its appeal to some investors as a decentralised asset outside the conventional banking and sovereign-debt system. Crypto-linked stocks also benefited from the move, including companies with significant Bitcoin holdings and cryptocurrency trading exposure.
However, Bitcoin remains highly volatile. While dollar weakness and supportive regulation can bolster demand, changing risk sentiment, leverage and regulatory developments can lead to sharp reversals.
Gold futures rose to their highest level in more than three months, breaking above $4,600 per ounce. Investors moved into bullion as Treasury buyback plans prompted questions about stress in the government bond market and as the dollar fell to its lowest level since May against a basket of major currencies.

Gold is often sought as a hedge against currency depreciation, inflation and financial instability. The combination of elevated Treasury yields, expanding federal debt and geopolitical tensions has reinforced demand for the metal, even though higher yields normally increase the opportunity cost of holding non-interest-bearing gold.
The rise in gold prices suggests investors are increasingly focused on fiscal credibility and the outlook for the dollar. If long-term yields remain elevated despite Treasury intervention, gold could continue attracting defensive capital.
Gold prices could climb above $5,000 per ounce by 2027, according to Morgan Stanley, after the precious metal reached the bank’s fourth-quarter target of $4,450 faster than expected.
Gold is a long-term store of value and this storage capacity is standardized internationally. Each troy ounce of gold has the same value. The yellow metal is an asset with intrinsic value in itself, capable of maintaining its purchasing power throughout the centuries and around the world.
Oil prices also extended their recent rally. West Texas Intermediate crude closed slightly above $87 per barrel, while Brent crude surpassed $94 per barrel. The gains reflected concerns that escalating U.S.-Iran tensions could disrupt oil supplies and trade routes, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz.
President Trump has threatened severe new economic measures against Iran, and Bessent warned that countries maintaining ties with Tehran could face severe consequences. “Any remaining tie to Tehran will hasten a nation’s economic oblivion,” Bessent said, echoing the administration’s tougher stance.
Higher oil prices could reinforce inflation pressures at a difficult time for central banks. Energy costs affect transportation, manufacturing and household budgets, potentially limiting the scope for future rate cuts.
Friday’s market action highlighted a divided investment landscape. Stocks recovered modestly, but the week’s losses showed that high bond yields remain a critical obstacle. Bitcoin and gold benefited from dollar weakness and fiscal concerns, while oil prices reflected heightened geopolitical risk.
Investors will monitor next week’s Treasury market moves, fiscal-policy announcements, inflation data and developments in the U.S.-Iran conflict. Whether yields retreat sustainably—or resume climbing—will likely determine the near-term direction for equities, cryptocurrencies, gold and global financial markets.
